Free Online Course Registration Underway
BOWLING GREEN, O.—When the call went out to help students whose studies were interrupted by Hurricane Katrina, nearly 30 Bowling Green faculty members expressed an interest in teaching online courses for them through the Sloan Semester program.
“It was just a tremendous response, particularly because faculty already have full teaching loads,” according to Connie Molnar, director of IDEAL, BGSU’s office for distance learning. “The online courses will help students in a time of great need,” she continued, adding that the courses are free to students whose campuses were affected by the August hurricane.
BGSU is offering 10 online courses through the Sloan Semester, a collaborative national initiative funded by the Sloan Foundation in cooperation with the Sloan Consortium, the Southern Regional Education Board, the Ohio Board of Regents and the BGSU Board of Trustees.
Courses will run on an accelerated semester beginning Oct. 10. An online course catalog and registration information can be accessed at http://www.sloansemester.org/. Students may register now through the first day of classes.
BGSU offerings include: Child Development 221, Educational Research Methods 682, Great Ideas 250, Introduction to International Relations 172, Introduction to Literary Theory & Criticism 202, Introduction to Philosophy 101, Introduction to Women’s Studies 200, Organizational Communication 307, Population Geography 325 and Principles of Public Relations for Non-Majors 341.
BGSU course subjects were chosen based on filling perceived student needs and availability of online courses from other institutions participating in the program, Molnar indicated.
