5 ILLEGAL ALIENS INDICTED FOR THE FRAUDULENT USE OF IMMIGRATION DOCUMENTS

Savannah, GA—Lisa Godbey Wood, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, announced the indictment and arrest of five foreign nationals on charges related to the use and possession of fraudulent immigration documents, and praised U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents for their efforts that led to these arrests.

The six count indictment alleges that the five men, all citizens of India and illegally in the United States, submitted fraudulent applications for U.S. residency to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which would have allowed them to remain and obtain employment in the United States despite their status as illegal aliens.

Mohammed Shaukat Jamal, 31, New York, Ashishkumar Gordhanbhai Patel, 32, Brunswick, Georgia, Hemant Kumar Patel, 27, Pooler, Georgia, Yogeshkumar Patel.30, Brunswick, Georgia, and Sanjaykumar Arvindhai Patel, 35, Savannah, Georgia were charged in the indictment with conspiracy to make, posses and use fraudulent immigration documents, as well as the possession, use and attempted use of fraudulent immigration documents. These charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000.

Members of the public are reminded that an indictment contains only allegations. A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government's burden to prove a defendant's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.

Assistant United States Attorney Jeffrey J. Buerstatte is prosecuting this case.
