Endangered Duck Population Reaches Triple Digits
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) biologists and partners are pleased to report that the endangered Laysan duck at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) have had a very successful breeding season. This year's tally of 56 juveniles has increased the population at Midway to 104. This is the second year since the wild birds were first moved (translocated) to Midway Atoll from Laysan Island.

NASA and NOAA Announce Antarctic Ozone Hole Is A Record Breaker
NASA and NOAA scientists report this year's ozone hole in the polar region of the Southern Hemisphere has broken records for area and depth. The ozone layer acts to protect life on Earth by blocking harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. The "ozone hole" is a severe depletion of the ozone layer high above Antarctica. It is primarily caused by human-produced compounds that release chlorine and bromine gases in the stratosphere.

Maine Earthquake Lowers Ground Water- Water in Monitoring Well Still Dropping
A minor earthquake that shook Maine Oct. 2 at 8:07 pm caused the water level in a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) monitoring well to drop more than 2 ½ feet. Nearly 17 hours later, the groundwater level was still dropping, according to scientists at the USGS Maine Water Science Center in Augusta.

2006 Nobel Prize in Physics Announced
George F. Smoot, 61, leader of a research team that was able to image the infant universe, revealing a pattern of miniscule temperature variations which evolved into the universe we see today, has been awarded the 2006 Nobel Prize for physics. He shares the award with John C. Mather of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The citation reads "for their discovery of the blackbody form and anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation."

King Aerospace to Build, Test Radar For NOAA Hurricane Hunter Aircraft
NOAA announced that it is exercising a contract option with King Aerospace Inc. of Addison, Texas, for the construction, integration and system testing for a tail Doppler radar, or TDR, to be installed on the agency's Gulfstream-IV hurricane surveillance aircraft.
