ATF ASKED TO HELP DETERMINE CAUSE OF FIRE THAT CLAIMED LIVES OF MOTHER AND CHILD
MARYSVILLE, Calif. – The Marysville Police Department requested the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in determining the origin and cause of a fire that took the life of an 18-year-old mother and her one-year-old child.
“The loss of lives of a young mother and her child are devastating,” said Stephen K. Martin, Special Agent in Charge of ATF’s San Francisco Field Division. “ATF will assist the Marysville Police and Fire Departments in any way we can.”
The fire occurred in a two-story apartment complex that burned on Sept. 18 at the intersection of 7th and C Streets in Marysville. The seven-unit complex was an addition to a concrete building containing a local thrift store, The Pink Trunk. The fire destroyed the buildings, causing an estimated several million dollars in damage.
Marysville Police Chief Jack Beecham praised the efforts of the Marysville Fire Department and several other neighboring fire departments who joined together to extinguish the fire. “It could have been much worse without the quick and expert response of the fire service,” he said. “We are devastated by the loss of a young mother and her small child and every possible effort is being made to determine the cause of this tragedy. This is why we have called on the generously offered resources of the California Department of Forestry and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. At this time, we do not know the cause of the fire, but we intend to find out.”
Martin deployed ATF’s Division Response Team, comprising special agents from various offices in Northern California to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
