TEENS AND MONEY

How many times have you talked to your teen or college student about saving money from his summer job? Making her own car insurance payments? Getting a credit card? The older your children get, the more they have to deal with real-world challenges like these. Help them get ready for adult life with the free Teens and Money package from Wells Fargo, the Missouri Insurance Education Foundation, and the Federal Citizen Information Center.

Of course you know that shopping around, saving, and investing are surefire ways to stretch your dollars, but the words “comparison shop” and “certificate of deposit” probably aren’t even close to being in your teen’s vocabulary. Help him see how much he’ll have left if he buys the latest fashions on sale instead of full price. Help her put together a budget so she can put more of the savings from her summer job toward next semester’s books. And while you’re at it, give them the Hands on Banking® program, a fun, informative CD-ROM in English and Spanish. With explanations and activities geared especially for high schoolers and adults, they can use it to practice everything from saving to spending to investing without using a cent of their own money (or any of yours). The program is non-commercial and doesn't contain any product promotion.

While your teens are figuring out how to spend money wisely, help them learn about insurance, too. Teens may think getting insurance is risky and makes you more likely to get into car crashes. They may think the premiums are a waste of their hard-earned money. With the How We All Benefit From Insurance CD-ROM, they can explore these and other myths in an interactive setting. They may know that most states require car insurance, but they’ll probably be surprised to learn having insurance can help them get a loan for their next set of wheels.

The young adults in your life are poised to take on the world. Make sure they have the money and insurance smarts to do it with the Teens and Money package. There are three easy ways to get your free package:
  • Send your name and address to Teens and Money, Pueblo, Colorado 81009.
  • Call toll-free 1 (888) 8 PUEBLO. That’s 1 (888) 878-3256, weekdays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time and ask for the Teens and Money package.

Get even more information and take advantage of online government resources at www.FirstGov.gov and www.Espanol.gov—your official English and Spanish web portals to the Federal government.
