WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), announced today 10 new university partnerships between the U.S. & Mexico as part of the Training, Internships, Exchanges and Scholarships (TIES) program. Assistant Administrator, Adolfo Franco, officially announced the U.S. & Mexican university recipients in a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

“TIES university partnerships demonstrate the true potential of collaboration among both of our countries. These institutions not only impart knowledge that serves development, but also imparts cross cultural understanding that is critical in addressing the problems of an often divided world,” said Franco.

The selected partnerships are:

  • Southwestern University Law School & Tec de Monterrey- campus Monterrey
  • American University & Universidad Autonoma Benito Juarez de Oaxaca
  • Oregon State University & Universidad de Guadalajara
  • University of Arizona & Universidad de Baja California
  • California State University at Fullerton & Universidad Autonoma de Tlaxcala
  • University of North Texas & Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara
  • University of Georgia & Universidad Pedagógica Veracruzana & Escuela Normal Veracruzana
  • Duquesne University & Universidad Autonoma de Aguascalientes
  • University of Texas at San Antonio & Universidad Veracruzana
  • Western Illinois University & Universidad Autonoma de Queretaro & Universidad de la Selva

The TIES initiative is a $50 million, eight-year collaborative program between the U.S. government, U.S. and Mexican educational institutions, and the private sectors of both countries. It is designed to advance the objectives of the Partnership for Prosperity, a key initiative of President George W. Bush and Mexican President Vicente Fox. USAID is providing $35 million for TIES, with partners contributing an additional $15 million. With these latest grants, the TIES program has succeeded in reaching a goal of supporting at least 55 partnerships between U.S. and Mexican universities.

Facilitating the pursuit of a common development agenda between the U.S. and Mexico, the TIES initiative enhances the capacity of higher education institutions of both nations to examine mutual development problems, work in strategic alliances to develop solutions, and create the basis for Mexico’s benefiting more fully from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and a planned Free Trade Area for the Americas. Training from these institutions will give Mexican participants the skills and collaborative linkages to enable them to respond more effectively to Mexico’s development challenges and opportunities.
