Brown Charges State Bar Employee with Embezzlement and Filing False Tax Returns
Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. on Monday filed seven criminal charges against Sharon Elyce Pearl, who embezzled $675,000 from the State Bar of California to pay for "spa treatments, designer clothes, lavish meals, and fancy hotel rooms."

announced the removal of over 7,200 marijuana plants yesterday from three cultivated fields located within the Cleveland National Forest, CA. The plants ranged from 3 to 7 feet in height and have an estimated street value of more then $20 million dollars. New Report: HIV Statistics in Federal Prisoners
Between 2005 and 2006 the number of state and federal prisoners who were HIV-positive decreased 3.1 percent –– from 22,676 to 21,980 inmates, according to a report by the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). Another BJS report estimated that 44 percent of state inmates and 39 percent of federal inmates reported a current medical problem other than a cold or a virus.

Moving Inmates Out-Of-State Reduces Prison Overcrowding
In a move that has significantly reduced prison overcrowding, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) has transferred 3,536 inmates to private facilities in four states and is on schedule to move the full complement of 8,000 inmates by March 2009, as authorized by Assembly Bill 900.
