Substance Use Treatment Need and Receipt among People Living in Poverty
Combined 2006 to 2008 data indicate that 3.7 million persons aged 12 or older living in poverty were in need of substance use treatment in the past year.  Of these, 17.9 percent received treatment at a specialty facility during this time period.

Substance Abuse Grants for Drug Free Community Coalitions
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), has announced the availability of new Drug Free Communities (DFC) Support Program funding.  ONDCP expects to award approximately $18.75 million for 150 new competing grants to support the efforts of community coalitions working to prevent and reduce substance use among youth.

In Brief Among young adults approaching their 21st birthdays (i.e., persons surveyed in the 30 days prior to their 21st birthdays), 86.1 percent had used alcohol in their lifetime, including 62.8 percent who had initiated use before their 18th birthdays.

A federal district court has ordered the marketers of two dietary supplements – "Supreme Greens" and "Coral Calcium" – who claimed the products would cure ailments ranging from cancer and Parkinson’s disease to heart disease and autoimmune diseases to pay nearly $70 million for deceiving consumers about the products’ effectiveness and safety. HHS Grants Announces $13.4 Million in Financial Assistance to Support Nurses
HHS Deputy Secretary Bill Corr today announced the release of $13.4 million for loan repayments to nurses who agree to practice in facilities with critical shortages and for schools of nursing to provide loans to students who will become nurse faculty.  The funds were made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), signed Feb. 17, 2009, by President Obama

HHS today announced the availability of $200 million to support grants, loans, loan repayment, and scholarships to expand the training of health care professionals.  The funds are expected to train approximately 8,000 students and credentialed health professionals by the end of fiscal year 2010.

Healthy Families Program Wait List Effective July 17, 2009
The 18 month budget enacted for January 2009 through June 2010 left a $14 million shortfall in the Healthy Families Program (HFP) budget. The Governor and Legislature have proposed additional reductions in state HFP funding. Based upon actions taken by the Budget Conference Committee of the California Legislature, the HFP shortfall is likely to be at least $90 million general fund (GF) and $270 in total funding for the coming fiscal year.
