Health Department announces tobacco control grant opportunity
The South Dakota Department of Health will offer entities up to $45,000 in grant funding to work on tobacco control issues. Funding will be awarded to projects that address one or more of the program’s goals of preventing initiation of tobacco use, increasing tobacco cessation, and reducing exposure to secondhand smoke. Projects that duplicate current Department of Health programs or grant projects will not be eligible for funding. Deadline for applications is May 5, 2008.

Methamphetamine Use: Study Shows Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine, Prescription Drug and Marijuana Abuse are on the Rise.
Problems with alcohol as a primary substance of abuse accounted for 40 percent of the 1.8 million admissions in 2006 for substance abuse treatment in the
United States according to a report based on the latest nationwide survey of treatment facilities.
Yet this percentage of admissions for alcohol abuse treatment is markedly lower than the 51 percent share it represented in 1996.
