SAMHSA Accepting Grant Applications for Expanding the Substance Abuse Treatment Capacity of “Treatment Drug Courts” Across the Nation

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is accepting applications to expand and/or enhance substance abuse treatment services to “problem-solving” courts that use the treatment drug court model in order to provide alcohol and drug treatment, recovery support services supporting substance abuse treatment, screening, assessment, case management, and program coordination to defendants/offenders.

More than 1800 drug courts have been established throughout the nation and are designed to deal more effectively with the substance abuse problems of those in the criminal justice system and provide them with opportunities to fully recover from their disorders and become productive members of the community.   These programs are also geared toward lessening the tremendous burden substance abuse-related problems place on the traditional court case process.

These SAMHSA grants for FY 2008 are directed for the expansion and/or enhancement of substance abuse treatment court services in adult treatment drug courts.   Adults make up the vast majority of the criminal justice system population affected by substance abuse.   According to some estimates, 60 percent of the nation’s treatment drug courts are focused on this population.

It is expected that $5.4 million will be available to fund up to 18 grants. The average annual award amount is expected to be up to $300,000 per year for up to three years. The actual award amounts may vary, depending on the availability of funds. The grants will be awarded by SAMHSA’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment.

WHO CAN APPLY: Eligibility is limited to existing treatment drug courts that have demonstrated agreements or relationships with existing domestic public and private nonprofit entities and community-based treatment providers.

HOW TO APPLY: Applications for No. TI-08-007 are available by calling SAMHSA’s Information Line at 1-877-SAMHSA7 [TDD: 1 800-487-4889] or by downloading at http://www.samhsa.gov/Grants/2008/ti_08_007.aspx .  Applicants are encouraged to apply online using www.grants.gov .

APPLICATION DUE DATE:   April 10, 2008.  Applications must be received by the due date to be considered for review.   Please see Section IV-3 of the application for revised FY 2008 submission requirements.

Applicants with questions about program issues should contact Holly Rogers at 240-276-2916 or holly.rogers@samhsa.hhs.gov .   For questions on grants management issues, contact Kathleen Sample at 240-276-1407 or kathleen.sample@samhsa.hhs.gov .
