Broadband Grants: USDA and Commerce Announce Broadband Initiative- Deadline Aug 14, 2009

NTIA and RUS will be accepting applications for loans, grants and loan/grant combinations to be awarded by each agency under a single application form. This collaborative approach will ensure that the agencies' activities are complementary and integrated, make the best use of taxpayer funds and make it easier for applicants to apply for funding. This is the first of three rounds of funding the Agriculture and Commerce Departments will provide.

HUD Awards $49 Million In Grants To Help Low-Income Families Get Job Training And Employment
U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Steve Preston today announced that public housing agencies in 48 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico will receive nearly $49 million to provide low-income people with the necessary job training to put them on a path toward self-sufficiency.

The purpose of this grant is  (a) To promote gender equity in education in the United States; (b) to provide  financial assistance to enable educational agencies and institutions to  meet the requirements of title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972  (20 U.S.C. 1681 et seq.); and (c) to promote equity in education for women and girls who suffer from multiple forms of discrimination based on sex, race, ethnic origin, limited English proficiency, disability, or age.

On October 21, 2008, a former research recipient convicted of intentionally misapplying federal grant funds was sentenced to a combined 15 months' in prison and home detention and ordered to pay $120,000 in restitution.

Brookhaven Lab Offers Grants to Promote Diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math
The U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory has announced a new grant program to increase interests and strengthen skills in science, technology, engineering, and math among 10- to 15-year-old females, African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos(as), and/or Native Americans. Known as BreakThru Mini-Grants, these one-time grants of up to $5,000 will be competitively awarded to local nonprofit community organizations in Suffolk County.
