Cal Grant Awards Reinstated in California
With the enactment of Senate Bill 70 (SB 70), Cal Grant recipients renewing for the 2011-12 academic year, like new applicants, had to meet income and asset ceilings and minimum need requirements. This resulted in about 16,000 Cal Grant recipients being disqualified during the renewal process for not meeting the new requirements. About 5,500 former Cal Grant B recipients met both the Cal Grant A and Cal Grant B program requirements at the time they were initially awarded the Cal Grant B.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), has announced the availability of new Drug Free Communities (DFC) Support Program funding.  ONDCP expects to award approximately $18.75 million for 150 new competing grants to support the efforts of community coalitions working to prevent and reduce substance use among youth.

The grants will support job training programs to help dislocated workers and others, including veterans, women, African Americans and Latinos, find jobs in expanding green industries and related occupations. Approximately $28 million of the total funds will support projects in communities impacted by auto industry restructuring.

Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, awarded $60 million in Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Continuation Grants to 565 Drug-Free Communities coalitions and five DFC Mentor Continuation coalitions. These grants will assist local community coalitions as they work to prevent and reduce youth substance use.

HHS Grants Announces $13.4 Million in Financial Assistance to Support Nurses
HHS Deputy Secretary Bill Corr today announced the release of $13.4 million for loan repayments to nurses who agree to practice in facilities with critical shortages and for schools of nursing to provide loans to students who will become nurse faculty.  The funds were made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), signed Feb. 17, 2009, by President Obama
