Funding Available for Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment Programs to Combat Substance Abuse
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is accepting grant applications for Cooperative Agreements for Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment (SBIRT) programs at the state and tribal level. SBIRT programs are proactive approaches that provide early identification and early intervention for persons at risk for, or diagnosed with, a substance use disorder.
SBIRT programs are one of the key elements of the National Drug Control Strategy, and promise to expand and enhance the effectiveness of state and tribal substance abuse service systems by:

Expanding their continuum of care to include screening, brief intervention, referral and treatment in general medical and other community settings, such as community health centers, nursing homes, schools, occupational health clinics, and hospitals;

Supporting clinically appropriate services for persons at risk for, or diagnosed with, a substance use disorder (i.e., substance abuse or dependence); and

Identifying systems and policy changes to increase access to treatment in generalist and specialist settings.
It is expected that approximately $10 million will be available to fund up to 4 grants. The average annual award amount is expected to be about $2.5 million per year for up to five years. The actual award amount may vary, depending on the availability of funds. The grants will be awarded by SAMHSA’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment.
WHO CAN APPLY: Eligibility is limited to the immediate office of the Chief Executive (for example, Governor) in the states, territories, and the District of Columbia, or the highest ranking official for federally recognized American Indian/Alaska Native tribe or tribal organizations.
