National Trademark Expo to be held at USPTO’s Alexandria Campus April 10-12
U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Jon Dudas will formally open the National Trademark Expo on Thursday, April 10. Joining Under Secretary Dudas will be Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille, Smokey Bear, the Pillsbury Doughboy®, Sprout® and other iconic trademarked characters. Free Genealogy Fair: National Archives Hosts Free Genealogy Fair
The National Archives will host its fourth annual Genealogy Fair. This year’s program will highlight Federal records located at the National Archives relating to general genealogy, World War I, and the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Sessions will offer guidance on topics including Civil War pension files, Freedmen’s Bureau marriage records, World War I draft registration records, and New Deal publications. National Archives staff will demonstrate how to use databases including the Archival Research Catalog (ARC) and Access to Archival Databases (AAD). The fair will provide information and guidance for experienced genealogy professionals and novices alike. This event is free and open to the public.

2008 International MBA Business Case Competition: USPTO and The George Washington University Team Up
The George Washington University School of Business has partnered with the Department of Commerce’s United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for its 2008 International Business Case Competition. The competition has brought together 18 teams of MBA students from around the world, each of whom will present proposed solutions to the pressing issues of patent pendency and backlog at the USPTO. The competition will culminate on March 28-29 at the Washington Marriott Hotel, when the teams will present their proposals to a panel of judges, including USPTO senior management executives and business leaders from an array of industries including finance, technology, hospitality, consulting and others.

Phishing Workshop: FTC to Host Roundtable Discussion on Phishing Education
The Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection will host a half-day roundtable discussion on phishing education on Tuesday, April 1, 2008. Phishing is a form of online identity theft that uses deceptive spam to trick consumers into divulging sensitive or personal information, including credit card numbers and other financial data, either through email or a link to a copycat site. The roundtable event will provide an opportunity for experts from business, government, the technology sector, the advocacy community, academia, and the media to discuss new strategies to increase awareness of the issue and decrease risky online behavior.

Addis Ababa (U.S. Embassy) -- As part its African-American History Month Program, the United States Embassy today in Harar opened the photography exhibition “Building Islam in Detroit.” Harari State President His Excellency Murad Abdulhadi and visiting United States speaker Reverend Dr. Elbert Ransom presided over the opening ceremony at the Amir Abdullahi Hall. The exhibition is open to the public and will be on display in Harar until February 9. The exhibition will open at the Dire Dawa Public Library on February 10, in Addis Ababa on February 25 and in Jimma on March 17.
