Stroke is the third leading cause of mortality in the United States and Europe, and a considerable cause of disability, hospitalizations, and acute and long-term care. However, whether exercise definitively reduces stroke risk has been a controversial question. This review summarizes the collective evidence from large studies to arrive at a recommendation of physical activity to prevent stroke and suggests potential mechanisms by which exercise and physical activity may reduce stroke risk.
